I was messing around the other day and found a neat little trick to make some totally random abstract geometry. It is really fun and the results can be very cool. Here's what I figured out. I made a closed circle using the closed circle tool.
Then I extruded it. I am not sure if a cylinder primitive will work the same in the end but it's worth trying. Okay, this step is key! Convert the cylinder into a Bezier Surface. If you don't get the results that I did in this tutorial it's because you forgot to convert to a Bezier Surface here.
Now that you have a Beizier Surface immediately convert it to a Polygon Mesh.
Now is the fun part. Use the thickness tool. Not just once but a bunch of times.
This is the setting I used. You can play around with the number.
Here is my cylinder with the thickness tool applied twice.
Five times.
Okay, I hit the thickness tool a couple of more times for a total of 8 applications. Then I rotated it to a horizontal position and added a background plane. I applied the glass texture to the whacked out geometry. Then I dropped a point light inside it so the light would shine out. I also put a couple of spot lights and a few more point lights around to light the scene. I shut off the global light too. I placed a camera in where I liked the angle and rendered.
I fiddled around allot to get the lighting the way I liked it and this is what I ended up with. The cool part about a project like this is that it is totally random. It would be very hard to reproduce the same thing twice. I had fun. I hope you do too.
