Okay, so it's that time of year again. It went by so fast! Anyway here is a little tutorial that uses anti-matter instead of booleans to make holes for eye and mouth in a jack-o-lantern. Hope you like it.

First thing I did was made a circle as guide with the circle tool. Then I used the "open pen" tool to make the ribs of the pumpkin that will be our jack-o-lantern.

Next use the "Extrude" tool to pull the ribbed circle you made up like this.

Now you want to convert this shape to a skinned object.

Once it's converted to a skinned object the next step is to use the "un skin" tool. When your done you should see all the ribs that made the shape.

Okay, here is where the jack-o-lantern starts to take shape. Take the ribs from the un skinned object and start to scale them and move them around so that they will make the shape of the jack-o-lantern like I did below. Then once you have them where you like them use the "skin" tool to re-skin them.

Now you should have something like this.

I did the same thing for the top vine part of the pumpkin.

Let's make a pumpkin Texture. Select "Surface Texture" from the "new" menu of the project window.

Click on the "Map" button to choose the image map for the jack-o-lantern.

Click on the "Load" button to browse to your image.

Repeat what you did to load the image map for the "bump" map. Your shader should look something like this. With your jack-o-lantern and new shader selected click on the "Apply" button to the left of the textures in the project window.

Okay, now on to the face. Use your "closed pen" tool to make the eyes and mouth.

Once you have face items you like you will need to extrude them.

You will want to bend the mouth and sometimes the eyes to match the roundness of the jack-o-lantern so that your anti-matter will not interfere with your model. Use the "deform lattice" tool and apply it to your mouth. Make sure you have the "Link to geometry" checked. That way your lattice will follow your mouth when you move it around. Once you have the lattice on the mouth pull the center points out so it bends the mouth. Once you have them bent move them into the jack-o-lantern so they intersect with it.

Here is the magic. In your project window turn down the arrows for you face shapes. Then check the boxes marked "Anti-matter" This will make your face objects invisible when you render but also cut out the shapes in the jack-o-lantern.

When your all done you should have something that looks like this. I used a new texture on the eyes and mouth that had a little bit of a glow in it. (glow channel) I also dropped a sphere into the center of the jack-o-lantern that was anti-mattered too so it would look hollow.
